The cocktail dress is probably the most versatile of all special occasion looks (and you don't even need to drink to wear it!)

Although the little black dress is the universally accepted look for cocktail, jewel-tones, brights, even rich tapestries translate well to this short formal dress.

Most cocktail dresses serve as a blank slate for you to accessorize, so have fun with adding pearls, diamond-looks and gold or silver.

Adjust the silhouette of the cocktail dress to work for your figure, keeping the top and waist slim and fitted for the chicest look. For example, if you want to hide wide hips, opt for a dress that is strapless or has cap sleeves, a fitted waist and a full, knee-length skirt.

An all-over trim fit, like the one pictured above, is great on most body types as long as the fit isn't too tight to pull anywhere.
