4x4 Red Woven Scarf

Inspired by the Orphan Foundation of America's Red Scarf Project, I designed this super-easy, quick-knitting red scarf.

It has a really easy repeating pattern of squares of knits and purls, giving the finished scarf a woven look that is suitable for a man or a woman, for giving to a stranger or to your beloved on Valentine's Day. If you can count to four, you can make this scarf.

• about 150 yards of bulky weight acrylic or superwash wool (I used Lion Brand Jiffy in color Chili and needed a little more than a skein)
• one pair size US 11 needles
• scissors
• crochet hook or yarn needle

Gauge

Gauge is not critical, but I got about three stitches and four rows per inch.

Size

Finished project is about five and a half inches wide and 60 inches long.

1. Cast on 16 stitches.
2. Rows one through four: Knit four, purl four, knit four, purl four.
3. Rows five through eight: Purl four, knit four, purl four, knit four.
4. Repeat these eight rows until scarf measures around 60 inches.
5. Bind off.
6. Cut off excess yarn and weave in ends.

Lion Jiffy is a 100 percent acrylic mohair-look yarn that is machine washable and dryable, making it great for charity knitting or gift knitting where you don't want to burden the recipient with elaborate care instructions.

It is light but warm, inexpensive and easy to work with. It is a good value for people who want nice looking yarn without the expense of wool or for knitting for people who are sensitive to wool.
